10 tips for proper use and care of your garbage disposal

  • 1. Don’t put the wrong objects down your disposal. Your garbage disposal is designed to grind food scraps and nothing more. Some of the objects that you should avoid putting down your drain include large animal bones, grease, fat, oil and objects made of glass, plastic and metal. It’s also best to avoid grinding any food that expands such as spaghetti and rice because they can clog your disposal.
  • 2. Break up large objects before grinding them. If you have large food scraps that you want to put down your disposal, give your unit a helping hand by breaking them up into smaller pieces and grinding them separately.
  • 3. Use cold water when running your disposal. Always run your disposal with cold water. This will help prevent any grease or oils that have made their way down your drain from solidifying and clogging your unit.
  • 4. Keep your disposal clean. After using your disposal, pour a small amount of dish soap down your drain with cold running water. This will help keep your disposal clean and combat bad smells.
  • 5. Grind citrusy fruits to help with bad smells. If your disposal begins to smell, try grinding a few lemon or orange peels to naturally freshen it up.
  • 6. Grind ice cubes to help maintain your unit. Grinding a few ice cubes once a month will help sharpen your unit’s blades and clear away waste that’s stuck on the walls of your disposal.
  • 7. Don’t use drain cleaners on your disposal. The chemicals in drain cleaners can damage your disposal. If you have a clog, give a plumber a call or try the step below to fix it instead.
  • 8. Hand-crank the disposal to break up jams. One of the best ways to fix disposal jams is to stick an allen wrench in the slot at the bottom of your unit and manually crank the blades to free it up.
  • 9. Don’t forget about the reset button. If your disposal is acting up, check and see if the reset button at the bottom of the unit has tripped. If it’s popped out, press it back down and try running it again.
  • 10. Exercise caution when retrieving something from your disposal. If you accidently drop something down your disposal, be very careful when trying to retrieve it. Make sure your unit is unplugged before attempting anything and try grabbing the object with pliers or a bent coat hanger instead of your hand.

5 DIY TIPS FOR DRAIN CLEANING

  1. First and foremost: baking soda. There are many cleaners and quick fix options for sale, but baking soda is not only something that most have in the home, it’s also gentle on your skin and the environment. Simply pour a little down the drain and scrub gently with a moist scrubber.
  2. Sometimes the unpleasant scent coming from your drain isn’t due to anything on the surface. Clogs are not only an annoying cause of slow drainage; they can also cause a bad scent resulting from an accidental buildup of matter and bacteria. If this is the case, put a half-cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar and immediately block the drain with a stopper. Let them sit for 15 minutes to allow the chemical reactions to occur. Then remove the stopper and put plenty of boiling hot water down the drain. The hot water should carry away the loosened matter. If you have a double sink, do both sides separately while stopping both drains each time. If you’re looking for a quick fix, pouring a small amount of chlorine followed by water sometimes does the trick especially for a nasty clog.
  3. There are numerous opinions on the subject, but the truth is that keeping the amount of oil and grease you drain to a minimum is key to your drain’s cleanliness.
  4. Use drain screens to keep hair, soap scum, hard food, and other solids from making their way into the drain.
  5. On-going maintenance is the easiest way to keep your drains clean. Once a week, simply clean all sink stoppers, drain screens and drain surfaces and then pour boiling hot water down your drain.

5 Tips to Keep Your Water Heater Healthy

https://waterheaterrepairhoustontx.com/

1. To save on energy costs, turn the thermostat down to 120 degrees. For every 10 degrees you lower the temperature, you’ll save approximately 5% in energy.

2. Insulate older units to improve efficiency. This reduces heat loss by up to 45% which could shave an average of 9% off of your water heating costs.

3. Each year test the Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (TPRV.) This valve prevents excessive pressure and keeps the water heater from exploding. To test the TPRV:
• Turn off the power and cold-water supply valves.
• Place a bucket underneath.
• Lift the valve to let some water out, then let go, if it keeps flowing or dripping, you’ll need to drain the tank partway and install a new valve.

4. Drain 1/4 of the tank a few times a year to remove sediment and debris, (and the heater will
run quieter.) To drain:
• Turn off the electric or gas to extinguish the pilot light.
• Hook up a garden hose to the drain and run water to the exterior or bathtub ten to fifteen minutes.
Make sure no other hot fixtures are in use while performing this.

5. Change the Viable Anode Rod about every five years before it fails. Doing this could double the life of your water heater. The rod attracts corrosive elements and keeps them out of the water. However, when the rod itself gets corroded, it can’t do its job and the water heater could rust. (Do not remove it permanently or it will void manufacturers warranties.) There are a couple of options for the type of rod you use.
• A magnesium anode rod protects better but doesn’t last as long.
• Aluminum/zinc rods are cheaper and are recommended for smelly water.
• Be sure to consult a water treatment specialist before purchasing and installing a new rod.
